The daily charges can last for 90 days, up to a maximum of £900.

Unless HMRC says otherwise, taxpayers who still haven't filed online by April 30 will start to incur further late-filing charges at the rate of £10 per day.

Ahead of the deadline, untied is urging affected taxpayers to take control of the matter now, to avoid adding extra charges to what they may already owe.

Even if individuals think they have a reasonable excuse for filing late, it's still best to file returns as soon as is possible, untied said, and then speak to HMRC later about appealing any penalty.

It is possible to get an estimate for how much will need to be paid in penalties for late Self Assessment tax returns.
