EU Settlement Scheme application deadline falls next month - how to secure pension access

EU, EEA or Swiss citizens (and their families) can apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to continue living in the UK beyond summer 2021. So long as applications are successful, claimants will gain access to UK state benefits, pensions and NHS services.

Where a claimant has not lived in the UK for five years in a row, they'll usually get pre-settled status.

For pre-settled status, claimants must have started living in the UK by December 31 2020, unless they are applying as the existing close family member of an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen who started living here by then.

Claimants can apply to switch to settled status once they've had five years continuous residence.

To apply for the scheme, claimants will need proof of their identity and residence in the UK, unless they have a valid permanent residence document, or valid indefinite leave to remain in or enter the UK.

Should an application be successful, claimants will be sent a letter confirming their settled or pre-settled status.

If an application was unsuccessful, they can apply again at any time up until June 30.

There is no charge for applications and new information or evidence can be provided for additional attempts.

Where claimants feel there may have been a mistake with their claim, they may be able to apply for an administrative review or appeal a decision.
