HMRC news: You could get up to £124 in tax relief for a change in working circumstances

HMRC, or HM Revenue and Customs, helps millions with their tax affairs, and a particularly important issue recently has been the working from home tax support available to individuals. Those who have been forced to work from home could be able to claim tax relief across the year. The important matter is how much Britons will be able to claim in working from home tax support.

It states: “You may be able to claim tax relief for additional household costs if you have to work at home on a regular basis, either for all or part of the week.

“This includes if you have to work from home because of coronavirus (COVID-19).

“You cannot claim tax relief if you choose to work from home.”

Ultimately, working from home tax relief can be claimed for a number of needs.

The Government explains these could include gas and electricity costs, metered water and business phone calls.

People, however, will not be able to claim for the whole bill under the set working from home tax rules.

Instead, they are only allowed to claim for the part which directly relates to their work.

Some individuals will also be able to claim tax relief on equipment they have purchased for work.

This may include a laptop, desk chair, or even a mobile phone for their needs.

Britons will be able to apply for working from home tax relief by using the Government’s online portal on its official website.

Here, they can expect to be asked a number of questions including what they are claiming tax relief for, and whether they fill in a Self Assessment tax return.

People will also be asked whether their employer has paid for their expenses if they are working from home.

This is an important issue to be up front about, as individuals will not be able to claim tax relief on the part an employer has paid back.

They will need to create a Government Gateway ID in order to claim, which is a quick and easy process.

Britons are generally advised to have their National Insurance number, as well as a recent payslip, P60 or a valid UK passport to hand for this endeavour.
