PIP, or Personal Independence Payment as it is formally known, is a benefit offered to individuals who have a long-term condition impacting their day-to-day life. To receive PIP, it does not matter whether a person is working or not, but they must be aged 16 or over, and usually must not have reached state pension age. The payment is overseen by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), responsible for ensuring everyone receives the right amount of help.
What people ultimately receive under PIP is based on their circumstances, namely, how severely their condition affects them, rather than the condition itself.
But people should be aware they could be entitled to a back payment, after it has been confirmed the DWP is reassessing certain situations.
Following two decisions made after landmark tribunals, the Government is now looking at how much people receive in PIP.
It was found the Department did not award the correct amount of points to certain individuals with mental health conditions - namely those who needed support engaging face to face with other people.

This was due to the COVID-19 crisis which meant the search for people had to be temporarily paused back in March 2020.
But as restrictions have slowly begun to lift, the DWP is now able to undertake its work again.
With the DWP undertaking regular checks, claimants can expect to be contacted in due course.
What a person ultimately receives in back payments is likely to vary on a case by case basis.
PIP is currently a tax-free payment which is offered by the DWP.
The amount a person receives will not be impacted by their income or savings.
It is currently made up of two parts - the daily living element and the mobility element.
Whether a person receives one or both of these parts is ultimately based on the severity of their condition.
The weekly rate for the daily living part of PIP has two levels, at either £60.00 or £89.60.
Per week for the mobility part, PIP claimants can expect to receive either £23.70 or £62.55.
