WASPI 'not against state pension equalisation but lack of notice has been life-changing'

"WASPI aren’t opposed to equalisation, but the lack of notice has been life changing for many.

"Recognition of this specific cohort of women is needed, with proper compensation put in place as a matter of urgency."

A Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) spokesperson said: “Our ground breaking pension reforms, including automatic enrolment, have helped millions more women save into a pension, many for the first time. Pension participation among eligible women working in the private sector has risen from 40 percent in 2012, to 86 percent in 2019.

“The Government decided 25 years ago that it was going to make the state pension age the same for men and women as a long-overdue move towards gender equality.

"Both the High Court and Court of Appeal have supported the actions of the DWP, under successive governments dating back to 1995, and the Supreme Court recently refused the claimants’ permission to appeal.”

Amanda Latham, Policy & Strategy Lead at Barnett Waddingham, commented on the findings: “The findings of our research are stark; women are twice as likely than men to be walking into retirement with insufficient funds.

"For many, a state pension alone is simply not enough to cover the costs of a comfortable retirement.
